As you may’ve already noticed, Little Insects albums are created in alphabetical order. The first letter of the alphabet, A, went to Almost Ghost and the second letter, B, went to Brighter Than Darkness. And so for the letter C, comes a mixtape called….
This is (kind of) a cover of Weezer’s “El Scorcho” that is also kind of a mash-up of “Free Falling” by Tom Petty and “So What’Cha Want” by Beastie Boys with a little of Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman” thrown in for good luck. I came up with this while practicing for my show this Saturday.
The first 25, individually numbered CD-R construction kits of “Brighter Than Darkness” will be available at the show for $5.
(Please note: there is no cover and no age limit, but you will be asked to buy a drink or food item by the server. However, that includes $3 genesee beer and cokes.)
The release of the new Little Insects album Brighter Than Darkness will also mark Pop Co-Op's, first-ever, fanufacturing Pop Co-Op Party!
What is a Pop Co-Op Party?
A Pop Co-Op Party is where the audience participates in the process of making and decorating the CD and packaging, then they get to take home the results. You, the audience, will be provided with a CD, markers, paper, glue sticks and other supplies to make and decorate your own CD sleeve as you listen to Little Insects play songs from the album live. It’s interactive CD releasing! This will mark the first time this has been attempted (at least by Little Insects), so don’t forget to come be a part of this experiment in CD releasing.
The Bandcamp-exclusive Brighter Than Darkness PDF booklet is also included with each download. The 12-page, high-resolution booklet includes full lyrics to each song, original designs and photography by A.D. Aliwat, Maria Rocha-Buschel, Wally Kankowski and myself.
You can also buy the album on iTunes or Amazon as well as several other stores very soon.
As for the CD, details about the physical release are still in the works. Look out for updates very soon. For now, you can start getting these sweet pop hooks stuck in your head:
Brighter Than Darkness, the full-length follow up to last year’s Almost Ghost, is now available for digital pre-order through Bandcamp. The digital pre-order is $5 for a limited time—it’ll later be $9.99 on iTunes and a few other online retailers after the release date.
And speaking of release dates, the album will “drop” (that is, “be released”) on December 1.
For all you window shoppers out there, you can stream 3 tracks from the album for free and download one of them for the price of your e-mail address. If you pre-order, you get all 3 tracks as an instant download.
Here’s the scoop on the three tracks online below. You can stream each one via bandcamp by clicking the play button above the song title.
"Let Go Of My Sweater" - Like Midnight, this song was originally included in the Autumn Skies EP. During the past few months, it has been entirely re-recorded with the help of Isaac Pinedale on drums and lead guitar as well as Daniel Kang and Colin Menzel on supporting vocals. The original version is still streaming on YouTube.
If you want to listen to or download any of the free EPs/singles from the past year off the Little Insects Bandcamp site, this weekend is your last chance.
As of Monday Oct. 3, I will be removing them from the site to make room for the new album Brighter Than Darkness, which will be out very very soon. When exactly? Hard to say. However, cover artwork, recording and mixing is 99% complete and it’ll be an easily consumable musical good very soon.
So if you replace all the tracks of an EP with newer, entirely re-recorded versions of the same tracks, is it still the same EP?
I’m going to say it’s not the same. It’s the + version of the original EP.
So here is the not-the-same, “Black Heartland EP+” with all new and ultra-improved versions of the original recordings. They now feature drums, bass, backing vocals (via Colin Menzel and Daniel Kang) and cello via (Will Levith).
If you wanna hear the old versions, you can still probably find them somewhere if you look hard enough.
In honor of American Independence Day tomorrow, here is a new hyper-country song called “Freedom / Believe.”
The song features Daniel Kang as “Charlie” and it’s about freedom, eagles, pick-up trucks, and beliefs, among other stuff. It’s also a free download on the Little Insects bandcamp site. Happy 4th of July in advance!
